SRB | ENG

Fields is back in Belgrade. A scaled-down installment of the festival of inventive music will take place on March 16, at the bank of Danube river, at the Silosi. The programme comprises 8 live acts, to be announced this month. The participants include musical projects from Slovenia, Ukraine, Greece, Russia, and Serbia. The gig will kick off early in the evening and last deep into the night.

Fields festival has been bringing inventive music to varied audiences since 2014. With its unpredictable genre combos, obscure and DIY music instruments, and fascinating cross-discipline performances, Fields encourages free thinking in all its forms.

In anticipation of the upcoming edition of the festival, we find out which interesting names are waiting for us at this edition of Fields.

Jay Glass Dubs

His music brings together the depth of dub, the refinement of avant-garde, and the catchiness of pop melodies Recorded an album with Leslie Winer, ‘the god mother of trip-hop’; remixed the works of How to Dress Well and collaborated with an avant-rock trio Guerilla Toss In his most recent releases, “Soma” and “You Would Love Me Now”, he ventures into various vocal formats reminiscent of early works of Massive Attack and King Midas Sound.

Lenhart Tapes trio

Vladimir Lenhart adds a punky vibe to his studies of musical ethnography of the Balkans—using miles of cassette tape According to The Wire, seeing Lenhart Tapes perform is a raw experience, like watching a movie by Emir Kusturica played backwards on a malfunctioning VHS player connected to a flickering TV screen His latest record to date, “Dens”, was released on a Dutch label “Glitterbeat”. The album plunges deep into traditional melodies by using loops in combination with guest vocals, including Svetlana Spajić, Tijana Stanković, and Zoja Borovčanin.

Will Laut

The musical visionary of the CoH project recorded collaborative albums with John Balance from Coil and Cosey Fanni Tutti from Throbbing Gristle; he made releases with Raster-Noton and performed at Sonar; Gaspar Noé used one of his works in the soundtrack for his film ‘Climax’ The vocalist of the project, who uses a pseudonym William Laut, sang in a Soviet boy choir, took part in Eurovision, and recorded stadium rock hymns WILL LAUT’s music combines velvety ambient pop, noirish minimalism, and a fragile synth tango. However, the duo themselves call it “electric chanson”.

Holy Palms

Creates a mixture of tribal music, electronics, and ambient inspired by the traditional music of Afghanistan, Iran, Egypt, Cambodia, and India Besides electronic instruments, Pavel uses a baritone guitar, Kurdish tanbur, bendir drum, wind instruments, and field recordings of Laurent Jeanneau made in South Laos and Cambodia Pavel is a member of two seminal power rock groups, uSSSy and Jesss.

r. roo

r.roo’s music resembles a spider web of infernal IDM waltzes, digital dark jazz, decadent minimal techno, and mystical ambient epics His recent ambient record, “Enough”, was recorded as a soundtrack for “Krov”, an art gallery located in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, but was never played there, since the building was destroyed during the first days of war The artist is currently working in two directions, one being a collaboration with the clarinettist Nowa Wave, the other—”Social Interaction Failure”, a new project combining ambient and breakbeat, which he started together with his wife troxellemott.

Transcendance Project

Street musician duo Transcendance Project plays a swirling mix of hardcore, dance-punk, and space-rock on Knez Mihailova street – one of the most popular tourist streets of Belgrade. The project consists of a drummer Ilia Babic, who took part in a Croatian television competition “Supertalent”, and a keyboard player Andrije Hadzic, head of the fusion band Funkier. Their toolkit is notable for its great simplicity: handmade drums and a basic synthesizer.

Bortnique

Bortnique’s creative trajectory is not easy to predict — it combines poetic hypnagogic pop, auto-tune ballads, poignant cloud folk, and desertic glitch hop Genesis P-Orridge, Pyotr Mamonov, Quentin Dupieux, and Wassily Kandinsky — those are some of Bortnique’s sources of inspiration, to name a few During his 12-year-long music career, he took part in several bands, including CTIZSC, Waltz, and Luzha, the third being alive and kicking — having just released a new album.
